We Help Care for Your Eye Health

When there are issues with your insulin, a hormone that helps regulate your blood sugar levels, you can develop diabetes. Having diabetes means your body doesn’t make or cannot use insulin properly, causing too much sugar to stay in your bloodstream. High blood sugar levels can cause damage to your eyes, impacting your vision.

We understand the complexities of diabetes and its effect on your eyes. We offer eye exams ideal for anyone with diabetes that monitors your eye health and protects your vision—visit Eyes Etc. Optical for a comprehensive eye exam.

How Diabetes Affects Your Eyes

Diabetes increases your risk of several eye diseases, like cataracts and glaucoma. The blood vessels in the back of your eyes are sensitive to damage caused by high blood sugar. When your blood sugar is too high for too long, these blood vessels can swell, break, and leak fluid into the eye.

Diabetic eye disease can lead to serious complications, including potential blindness. Diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema are common diseases related to diabetes.

  • Diabetic retinopathy occurs when the blood vessels in the eye become blocked, causing the eye to grow new, abnormal blood vessels that can break & leak fluid & blood into the eye.

Diabetic macular edema is a complication of diabetic retinopathy where leaking fluid causes the macula to swell, leading to eventual vision loss.

Our Technology

Diabetes can affect your vision at a level the human eye cannot see. We have invested in several tools to help us assess your eye health and vision. We use this technology during your eye exam to help protect your sight:

  • Retinal photography: Retinal imaging allows us to take detailed photos of the retina to look for signs of damage & eye disease
  • Diopsys: Diopsys technology helps us assess how the retina is functioning & track eye disease progression
  • Optical coherence tomography (OCT): Optical coherence tomography allows us to take detailed photos of the layers of your retina, helping us diagnose & treat eye disease

Visual field testing: Visual field testing helps us identify blind spots in your vision, helping us monitor changes in your vision & eyes

Regular Eye Exams Are Vital

Annual eye exams are essential for protecting your vision if you have diabetes. We can track changes to your vision and identify complications before they affect your eyes. Problems can develop even if you don’t have any visible symptoms.
